What is the medication?

The medications injected belong to a drug class called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. These drugs mimic the GLP-1 hormone that is released in the gastrointestinal tract in response to eating and play a role in appetite and digestion.

GLP-1’s target receptors in your brain and gut to slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach (gastric emptying) which makes you feel satiated sooner and feel full longer. GLP-1’s are also insulin sensitizers which mean they help your body process sugars more efficiently. GLP-1's, along with appropriate lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise), have proven to help individuals lose significant amounts of weight.

How does it work for weight loss?

How is it administered?

The medication is injected just under the skin into the subcutaneous fat in the abdomen once weekly. The provider will will teach you how to perform the injections at your first visit.

Potential side effects will be reviewed at the consult visit in detail. Gastrointestinal (GI) side effects are the most common with GLP-1's. The most common side effects include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and heart burn. Side effects are more notable at the initiation of treatment; for this reason, the medication is started at a low dose and increased slowly.

How much weight will I lose?

The degree of weight loss is strongly associated with an individuals adherence to the program and tolerance of the medication. The goal is to lose 1-2 pounds per week until the desired weight is reached. Many studies have shown individuals on optimal dosing to lose 15-20% of their body weight in one year. While these medications support notable weight loss, it is important for individuals to incorporate appropriate lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise) into their routine to achieve the maximum results. Obesity is a chronic condition and if the lifestyle modifications are not maintained, regaining weight is likely to occur after stopping the medication. We are here to support you on your journey to becoming a healthier you!

These medications are not for everyone. Appropriate treatment is for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30, a BMI over 27 with specific comorbidities (like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, or pre-diabetes) or for some overweight individuals who have been unsuccessful in losing weight in the past 6 months despite making a concerted effort. The provider will discuss risks, benefits, contraindications, and alternatives with you at the consult visit and determine if you are a candidate.
